The open gallery space reaching from the basement to the fourth floor of the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of New Mexico is a grand architectural gesture made by Antoine Predock. However, busy lives of the occupants of the building seldom allow for this hollow space to be recognized and appreciated.
For our architectural intervention we hope to attract attention to this space by installing eloquent patterns of string that connect to each floor. Each string represents every two people that travel from one floor to another, and the density of the strings represent the frequency the path is taken in relation to other paths.
As occupants ascend the building, the intervention rotates creating either a line, a plane, or a three-dimensional sculpture. Every angle approached has a different view creating new gathering spaces, and give a moment of pause for people to look up in their busy lives.
